What fabric are we using?
While we do not yet have a final fabric supply list as the designer's are still creating thier block, we will be using fabrics from Chemistry by Cosmo Cricket and coordinating Bella Solids. Naturally you may use any fabric you like!

As the blocks are released, Burgundy Buttons will offer a block-specific fabric pack for purchase while supplies last.

Beeboos

My first Bee. A Modern Bee.

I've never partaken in a bee before, so when Melissa came a calling- I came a answering!

Kicking off in January, this Bee contains women from around the globe. Each month, one of us takes our own fabric and mails it to the other beeboos who will in turn create a mini masterpiece and send it back.

Should be fun! Beeboos is my new favorite word.

Did you happen to see the Puzzle Box Quilt Project on the Moda Bakeshop? I fell in love with it immediately!

Don't you just love her use of solids? I am loving the quilting as well. I knew right away that I must add this to my long list of "must makes" but could not help but run to my EQ7 to play around a bit.

Domestic Bliss was still on my mind from creating yesterday's blog entry, so I started to mix some Domestic Bliss and Bella Neutrals and came up with...

Isn't she lovely? What do you think? Solids or Domestic Bliss? I love them both! If you use one Domestic Layer Cake and one Bella White Layer Cake you can actually make two quilts. Binding and borders are kind of fluid as they really vary by taste. I prefer a thin inner border to completely segregate the focus of the quilt to the border.

I can't decide- perhaps one day I can find the time to do both!

I thought Domestic Bliss might also look nice for the Avignon Picnic MBS project as well. I love this collection, so many ideas!

New at Burgundy Buttons! Shop by Color!

We love and listen to our customers and always welcome your feedback. And while there are some things we cannot change (yes, that would be shipping fees, see comment at the end), we strive to introduce the items that we can!

The most requested item we have received in the last year is the ability to shop by color! We will now list all new collections in a color category as well as by designer and by collection!

As time permits, we will also go back a color categorize existing collections.

So since we brought it up.....

Our shipping fees- I do get the occassional comment or complaint about shipping fees, so here goes:

I don't make money on shipping..period- it simply doesn't happen! Occasionally its a tad more and occasionally a tad less, but all in all we are right on the money with what the post office charges us. There is no mark up or attempt to gouge anyone on shipping charges in any way. A couple points you should know:

The cap on first class is 13oz, so that leaves out the "cheap" way to ship. Parcel Post doesn't really come out any cheaper until you start passing 10 pounds.
My shipping charges are very much in line with what I get charged from the Post Office. I tracked the fees versus the customer payment for 6 months to confirm, and adjusted my shipping charges accordingly.
Many other stores charge you more per item, so when they end up adsorbing the additional cost of shipping , they have already made up for it financially in their product charges.
Many other stores, and I am not knocking them in ANY way- cram as much as possible in those paper priority envelopes. The US Post Office has warned us that this is not appropriate, that these envelopes are for flat items only and it is up the discretion of the local Post Office whether they wish to mail them or return them. I have a rigid Post Office- they refused to accept them, especially for international parcels.
The US Post Office is in financial distress, so I am not sure I would attempt to use those flat rate envelopes inappropriately anyway- I want to see them succeed they are a part of our history! They are already having to cut their service to five days a week after the first of the year.
Burgundy Buttons charges less per item, but we must charge shipping charges that are equivalent to what we have to pay- we could not afford to stay in business otherwise!
We have comparison shopped the other online stores many times, and typically equivalent purchases end up cheaper at Burgundy Buttons when you calculate the items and shipping.
We have started to use the padded envelopes more and have begun tracking the costs.
The Post Office has recently released "Regional Rate" boxes, and we have started to track costs on those as well.
International shoppers experience the biggest financial impact, so we "hold" packages for many of them while they shop over a period of time to completely fill up their box.
Neither UPS or Fed Ex was able to beat the Post Office prices for our average amount, weight and size of our shipments.

So shop the place that feels best to you! But all in all- that's why our shipping charges are higher than some. I hope that helps!

The Nashville Heart Walk was a BIG Success! My company team raised over $10,320!!! My direct team raised $4,190! I could not have asked for a more perfect day than we had. It hovered around 65 degrees, we had an awesome breeze and the sky was clear with just a dotting of small clouds. Perfect for a 3-mile stroll!

Quilt Labels

How do you design your quilt labels? I use Adobe Illustrator. I import some of my favorite fabric images from the collection used to make the quilt. I then use the Live Trace & Live Paint functions to isolate elements of the fabric that please me. Adobe will even tell you the colors used in the fabric so that your quilt label complements the quilt perfectly. Here is a quilt label sheet I pre-designed for my Terrain quilts. I will modify the actual verbiage of the quilt label when I finish the quilt, name it or know who it's for. Enjoy! Perhaps a tutorial soon!

In 2008, Janet Albertsen, aka Momma Albertsen..wife, mother and friend passed away from Ventricular Fibrillation stemming from Congestive Heart Failure. Like many Americans, Momma Albertsen didn't know the grave consequences of untreated high blood pressure. Like many Americans, she was unaware that high blood pressure is often referred to as the "silent killer". Like many Americans, changing her life style seemed like something she would do "tomorrow".

Since my Mom's death, along with the American Heart Association, I have been committed to building a better healthier life for myself and anyone else who will listen. In addition to supporting Go Red for Women, I have participated in the annual Heart Walk organized by the AHA. I call out to you for your support in this year's walk.
